17 Uighur Prisoners Might Be Released into the US

Judge Ricardo Urbina ruled that 17 wrongly accused Uighur Muslims be allowed to enter the United States. Fourteen of the men had been found in the Tora Bora Mountains in Afghanistan, the others were found in similar run-down facilities. They had been held as war combatants, even though the American interrogators realized that they were not involved with the al-Qaeda. They continued to hold the group regardless, and began processing them for transfer to Guantanamo.

Religious groups in Tallahassee, Florida have pledged to help these men rehabilitate in Florida. Although the city may seem like an unlikely place for resettlement, this community is one of very few to put in an effort. Jobs, healthcare, and housing have been arranged for the men when they are released. The only thing that is not being offered is a Uighur mosque because presently Tallahassee does not have a UIghur mosque, but there are two other mosques there. The goal is to help these men so they can become self-sufficient.

It is about time that somebody starts showing some sympathy toward these men. It is wrong that they have been held in Guantanamo for so long without any real reason. They do not have any evidence that these men are dangerous. They faced persecution in China because of their religion, and trying to escape the cruelty by the Chinese government only caused them imprisonment and torture by the American government. These men deserve to be given a chance to live their lives, not in captivity. More religious groups in America should make efforts to welcome them, if they make an effort to want the men here, the government will be more likely to release them.
