China's carbon emissions to double by 2030

Rebecca Roberts; October 24, 2008 8:30am; China's carbon emissions to double by 2030

Over the past two decades China's carbon emissions have more than doubled and with the current output by China and carbon emissons, China is close to exceeding that of the United States.

According to the Chinese Academy of Science, if China does not take drastic measures to lower their carbon emissions then it will continue to rise above what the government originally suspected it would. It is estimated that by 2020 China's burning of fossil fuels and emissions of carbon dioxide will be at 2.5 billions tons and 2.9 million tons of pure carbon.

In 2007 the US emitted 1.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide, compared to China's 1.8 billion tons of emission. There are esimations that if action is not taken sooner then in China there is potential that by 2050 they alone will have carbon dioxide emissions exceeding 2.0 billion tons. Without drastic measures taken soon then China will be at what the Chinese Academy of Science predicts at over 2.5 billion tons.

It is recommeded that China should decrease their carbon dioxide emissions by 15% - 30% anually. Also it is note worthy to say that China with their carbon dioxide emissions are not emitting as much as rich countries but do have emissions much higher than that of poorer countires.
