Brazilian Model Gets Feet and Hands Amputated

Richard Gregory

1/25/09

A 20 year old Brazilian model had to have her feet and hands amputated due to a misdiagnosis of a blood infection. Her name is Mariana Bridi de Costa and she started to feel sick in December but ignored the symptoms due to her thinking it was just a common cold. It gradually grew into a urinary tract infection and than became septicemia. Septicemia is a blood infection which harms the tissue and makes blood harder to flow through the body. Her hands and feet eventually had to be amputated because the blood flow was too weak to reach those limbs.

This is a truly, devastating story because of the fact that your fighting to survive and everyday your symptoms get worse and worse. She was on her way to becoming a very well known model throughout the world. This just goes to show that even though she was important to her country and most likely had amazing doctors she still couldn’t be helped. The article also goes on to say that 800,000 people die each year in Brazil due to septicemia. I would say that this is a major social problem seeing how it affects so many people. More research and money needs to go into finding out what causes this disease and how to take care of it when someone does get infected. The day after I read this story, there was an update and it said she died. R.1.P Mariana Bridi de Costa.
