Soc 202 - Berlusconi upsets women over rape remedy

The Italian Prime Minister dropped another charge of sex violence. Women are very disappointed about this decision since this is not the first time. The comments is made like not crimes will not end unless they are “are as many soldiers on the streets as there are pretty girls” is very degrading, especially towards women. He explained that the comments full of a sense of humor, meaning that it was a joke, but joking about an important issue has citizens infuriated, especially women. There has been a large amount of sex crimes in Rome and for him to comments like that lets the city and country know that he is somewhat sexist. Like Vittoria Franco, and spokeswoman from Opposition said, he wants women to stay in the house, not be able to go anywhere. And if not, women should have somebody with them at all times. By me being a Women Gender Studies minor, it bothers me that these topics are still happening today. It’s going to take a while until the equality issues will be resolved. Why is it the women fault this is happening? The soldiers are obviously going through something, and to think that the Prime Minister would see that there is a problem when 30,000 soliders have been convicted for sex crimes of rape. Hopefully this world will become a better place so women don’t have to worry about who is around them and might be raped.

I agree that it is quite sad. I've seen other issues about Italy and the common attitudes on women, prostitution, and other issues dealing with sexuality, and unfortunately they have been in a similar vain. I some research on Italian policy on illegal immigrants and prostitution, and my findings were quite grim on behalf of many of the trafficked women. It would seem that the Italian government and much of the population has developed an attitude of nonchalance towards sexual violence.

It is pretty rediculous that these things are still going on today. Women have made a name for themselves all over the world, and for a sexist government official to be put in charge is completely and utterly crazy. Sexual violence towards women is a serious problem but sexist views are another issue completely.
