West Africa is quickly becoming a big smuggler of cocaine. Traffickers are smuggling the cocaine to Europe. South Africa, being the continent’s “economic hub,” is largely at risk for becoming a place for these traffickers to launder their drug money. It was reported these Vienna-based groups are even making up fake companies in developing countries to get possession of certain chemicals needed to make drugs. The traffickers then reroute the chemicals elsewhere to process into drugs. America being one place these drugs are being made. Mexico’s drug cartels are being blamed for these fake companies most often found in Africa. Due to lax controls these drug traffickers are taking major advantage of being able to gain control of substances needed to produce amphetamine-type stimulants such as methamphetamine and Ecstasy. It was reported that just recently in Ethiopia authorities recently seized 12.5 tons of ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine, which were bought using fake licenses. It has been noticed that South American countries have had an increase in imports of ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine. Although opium production has slowed, Afghanistan still produces more than 90% of the worlds “illicit opium.”
In order to crack down on this problem countries are really going to have to take the time to look into these imports and why exactly they are being imported. This problem is only going to continue if governments don’t take the time to investigate these issues. Seeing how Mexico’s drug cartels set up fake companies in other countries in Africa then have them reroute these drugs shows how much of a global problem this is.

This is terrible! I know that the drug trafficing goes on everywhere but something defintely needs to be done. What's sad is that probably in these under-developed countries there is probably not alot that they can do. They have alot of problems like sex slaves and starving children so it isn't as much of a big problem there as it would be here. Hopefully somebody can get in there and figure out exactly how thy're getting these chemicals and put a stop to it. It isn't surprising that the U.S. could possibly be assisting the chemical to Africa. People will do anything for money
It seems like this is a huge problem that's nearly impossible to control without international cooperation. But in desperate economic times like this, that seems unlikely. I wonder... if the U.N. became more powerful, could it help? (But how would that happen without nations relinquishing some of their power to the UN in a Hobbesian fashion?)
I believe that this isn't going to stop being a problem untill they get help from the international cooperation. That is probably the only way that this drug trafficing is going to be controlled. But along with Jesse's statement that probably isn't going to happen with the way our economy is today, because we are already dealing with so many economic issues.
