Latin American Drug Gangs Use GPS to Outwit Police

Drug smugglers are taking advantage of sophisticated technology to perpetuate their illegal activities, thwarting authority’s efforts to shut them down. They are employing common devices like global positioning systems (GPS) which are easily obtained and affordable in their attempts to navigate their drug-gorged vessels successfully through the oceans.
Historically traffickers would rely on a large quantity of gasoline to make the entire trip to deliver their illegal goods. GPS technology has made it possible for them to travel with a minimum amount of fuel and rendezvous with refueling ships along the way, thus carrying larger quantities of drugs. Drug cartels are utilizing other seafaring technology as well, such as submarines or semi-submersible crafts. The subs use the same GPS technology to refuel along the way as the speedboats. They are submerged or float almost detectably below the waters surface and authorities have noted that such devices are very difficult to detect.

Technology is neither good nor bad. It is mans usage of technology that must be critiqued, questioned, and determined. The propensity for man to regard technology with such emotional attachment or blame is not always fair. Technology is the realized invention of mans creativity and knowledge. It is not alive (in such that it has no consciousness) and can not decide the effects it will have upon our world or population. Thus is falls to be mans responsible for the consequences that result from his use of technology.
Unfortunately, technology in the wrong hands can results in detrimental social consequences that affect not only individuals and their families but entire communities. Global positioning systems (GPS) are used by drug traffickers to facilitate their smuggling operations and evade capture by authorities. The technology itself is not directly malicious. It is only one part of an entire cycle of events, orchestrated by (bad) men that ultimately results in the potential for adverse social consequences. It allows the perpetuation of illegal drug trafficking which allows the potential for drug abuse, increased criminal activity, and exacerbates an entire community of associated problems.
