This Thursday, Achim Steiner, the head of UNEP informed the public of a possible “Green New Deal” to aid the global economy as well as to fix the environmental problems that we are having as of now. This deal, inspired by the “New Deal” promoted by Franklin Roosevelt during the Great depression consists of an investment of $750 billion or the equal of one percent of the Worlds Domestic Product. This money will be taken from a tax on oil that will aid reach enough money to help jump start the world’s economy as well as to slow down the effects of the Global Warming. “Steiner listed five sectors in which the funding should be focused: improved energy efficiency for buildings, job creation in the solar and wind sectors, curbing poverty and combating global climate change” The talks to determine if this plan will go in effect will start on April 2 of this year.
I personally believe this is an awesome idea because not only it motivate companies to look for other energy sources since oil will have an extra tax added to, but it will also help raise money to help deal with the existing problem that we have thanks to the emissions by the burning of fossil fuels. Also the plan consists of investing a part of the money to create jobs which will help the worlds economy since the level of unemployment is the highest in history. I think this is a great plan and it should go in effect as soon as possible. The only ones to suffer from this will be the large oil companies, this means that the economic gap will also diminish.

Awesome! When looking for my article I read something similar, from NY Times that mentioned the Energy Secretary, Steven Chu has made it a priority to begin releasing the guarantees to help meet the administration’s twin goals of creating jobs and developing carbon-free sources of power.

“This investment is part of President Obama’s aggressive strategy to put Americans back to work and reduce our dependence on foreign oil by developing clean, renewable sources of energy,” Dr. Chu said in a statement on Friday. “We can create millions of new, good-paying jobs that can’t be outsourced. Instead of relying on imports from other countries to meet our energy needs, we’ll rely on America’s innovation, America’s resources, and America’s workers.”

Creating new jobs while meaningfully impacting global warming! :)
