Corporations Magellan Midstream Partners and Poet, the largest ethanol producer in the US are planning to possibly build a pipeline, from the midwest to the northeast. The plan proposes a 3.5 billion dollar 1,700 mile pipe line. Along this path many Ethanol distilleries could pump their oil in the system from Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio. The pipeline is in reply to the rising demand of ehtanol being pooled into the gasoline diet of american vehicles. This also reduces the slightly ironic method of trucking in the ethanol using diesle or the use of trains. A pipeline has few problems including corrosion in the pipelines from water retention which is common in this type of oil. This could cause leakage in the pipes which is obviously a bad problem. A couple of these pipelines already exist and have overcome the leakage problem as well as the problem of water retention.
Good idea in my opinion reading on this subject more i have found that it is almost pointless to truck in the ethanol because it ends up costing a lot more to the environment than petroleum fuels. But i have beef with ethanol for the most part the ethanol "plants" take up a large portion of land into monocultures which fed by fertilizers and using a plant that has been scientifically engineered to give it a higher rate of yield. There's a catch. To use this stuff you have to use the correct fertilizers, pesticides and other -cides to keep it going. If you dont use the correct formula the plants dies. Sure we get it faster but if it is grown naturally the damage reductioin to the earth is so much less. No dangerous runoff, no loss of nitrogen but i guess if your not going to eat it it just becomes another fuel, eh?
