This article takes place in Cameroon, Africa. About 17% of the population there are Christian, a large percentage, as there are many different religions that are embraced in the continent. There is also a lot of violence triggered by this... regardless, that isn't the point of the story.
AIDS is a worldwide pandemic which is almost always transmitted sexually. If you read the article and watch the short video clip before reading the article, you will see that these people in Cameroon idolize the pope.
Pope Benedict XVI, a former nazi (not really totally accurate, and yes, I'm saying that to get a rise out of members in the class), has publicly denounced the use of condoms in a region where people are dying because they don't have condoms.
There really is not much that even can be said about this; the reason being, devout christian people will respect and act of what "the pope" says. Also, people have sex with each other, whether or not they have AIDS, hepatitis, or anything else. They just do.
In Africa, there is no other way, besides condoms, to stop the spread of AIDS other than to be abstinent, which not only sucks, but is also impossible to enforce. Even endorsing that would be laughed upon by most.
I don't think africans should be listening to a white man who has never had sex before in his life, and obviously cares more about condoms and penises than death. Because no condoms = death in Africa, it's just a truth.
I mean, maybe that's what he's going for... I mean.. he did used to be a nazi and all. lol, just kidding... sort of....
