A woman has been arrested in Moscow, Russia on charges of murdering a look-alike that she met online and selling the victim’s apartment in a sketchy moneymaking scheme. The murderer’s mistake that led to the investigation was the victim’s dismembered body left on the balcony. The 46-year-old suspect engaged in an Internet friendship with her victim, who looked like her and was approximately the same age. The suspect came to the victim’s apartment in a Moscow suburb, poisoned her, and used her ID to sell the apartment. The apartment was sold quickly for about a quarter of the market price. The suspect faces murder charges and up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
The article also stated that stealing real estate and killing the owners of the home or land is very common in Russia. The wave of murders—often against elderly owners—became more common as apartments became a high valuable asset with the advent of capitalism following the 1991 Soviet collapse.
The fact that a crime like this is so common in Russia is horrific. Murder in itself is a horrid crime. However, murder to steal a house, land, or money is an even worse crime. To me, it is unbelievable to think that a person would do something like this. This is a crime that I think you would see on television and say, “Oh, well that would never happen.” But, it is happening and common in Russia. This is a horrible crime and should not be happening just because of the decline in economy in Russia.

I want to know why this is so common in Russia. Is the poverty level there so severe that people are willing to kill for a third of the market price? I hate that our entire lives have to be based on money and that all we care about is more "stuff". Murder is by all means not acceptable but even in the US we see beatings, abuse, and drug abuse all in the name of money. I feel like it is almost impossible to be a good person anymore, that there is less purity of the mind. Everyone is too stressed out.
