In Afghanistan, a new law has been passed effecting the Shia women that make up about 10% of the population. This law makes it illegal for a woman to deny her husband sex as well as leave her home without her husbands permission. The law has just been passed by Afghan president Hamid Karzai and since, he has been facing a lot of criticism by the UN and other civil groups. Many say that this law is promoting violence of women and will lead to a lot of problems.

Some of Karzai's critics claim that he passed this law to help himself win some votes in the upcoming election. It is clear that the president is in a bind, because he is still yet to comment on his new law.

I think that this law is absolutely horrible. It gives men the right to abuse their wives and will give men the power to hurt their wives tremendously. To keep a woman locked in her home without her husbands permission to leave is absurd and in the US considered abusive. I think it is completely rediculous that this was passed and allowed by the people. Also, I think that it is strange that this law singles out a certain group of women. I know that there is a lot of religious groups there, but it makes people seem like they are not equals. I think that the UN and other groups need to keep pressuring the Afghan president to make sure that he throws out this law immediately.
