Afghanistan 'rape' law puts women's rights front and center

Afghan parliament recently passed a bill intended to give the minority Shiite community their own identity. Critics say the latest draft strips Shiite women of rights as simple as leaving the house without permission from a male relative and as extreme as allowing a man to have sexual intercourse with his wife even when she says, "No." President Hamid Karzai addressed the law over the weekend, saying that key elements of the bill were misinterpreted by Western news organizations. He added that the Minister of Justice will study the "Shiite state law," line by line, to make sure it follows the nation's constitution, which requires equal rights to both sexes. Karzai did not address the most controversial part of the bill dealing with rape of a wife, but President Obama called the law "abhorrent" and said his administration has made it clear to the Karzai government that it objects to the law. Human rights groups and the international community have condemned the law and say it could undermine efforts to support basic human rights in the war-torn nation.
I think this is sad. It’s sad that women already don’t have equal rights, they can’t have freedom of speech or expression, and now they can’t even have a choice of what to do with their bodies. How do you make an unlawful act lawful? I believe President Obama has a right to say that the U.S. does not stand behind this law, but what could be done about this for the women’s sake? Some married men right here in the U.S. probably wished we had this type of law, but I believe women will forever be the targets of discrimination and degrading acts.

A law that legalizes rape? How is that ok? And can I ask exactly how anyone can misinterprut that? I agree that this is an abhorent law, but I don't know if I can agree with you on women never getting equal rights. Things may not have changed much over time, but they have changed, which even to a realist like myself, is hope for something better. There are people now that choose to speak out for women, not just women that are strong enought to try. It's work, and a work in prgress.
