In Baghdad, a United States aircraft fired on suspected Sunni paramilitaries planting a bomb on Thursday, April 02, 2009. This attack killed one person and wounded two. This was reported by the United States on Friday. A U.S. statement said the airstrike was launched Thursday night after four gunmen, allegedly members of the Sons of Iraq, were seen planting a roadside bomb near Taji, site of a large U.S. air base about 12 miles north of Baghdad. Sons of Iraq are Sunnis who broke with the insurgents and now work with the army and police to provide security in their areas. This symbolizes just another step back for the campaign in Iraq. It also shows that there is still a lot of corruption in the process to stabilize Iraq. U.S. commanders credit the Sons of Iraq in playing a major role in turning the tide against al-Qaida and other Sunni insurgents. The government is suspicious of the groups because they include many ex-insurgents. Shiite leaders also believe some of the members are infiltrators who are still working for the insurgents. "While we value our Sons of Iraq brothers, these men had broken faith with their fellow Sons of Iraq, the Iraqi people and us," said Maj. Gen. Daniel Bolger, commander of U.S. forces in the Baghdad area.
This article means so many things. It contains good and bad traits. I think it is amazing that we only kill one person and wound two in an airstrike. That fact shows our military superiority and precision. Most of the complaints coming from the United States are about civilian deaths. While I am not as worried about civilian deaths, I think it is great to be able to accomplish the mission without causing more damage than is needed. On the other hand this shows how bad things still are. The guys planting the bomb were supposed to be the good guys. People complain about killing innocent people…..this shows that even the guys that are here to help you can even be corrupt.
