Once again, a drug rehabilitation center in Ciudad Juarez was attacked. This time it happened at around 10:30 pm on Tuesday night (September 15, 2009) at the Vida Rehabilitation Center. Ten people were killed and another three were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the rehab center. Seven of the ten people killed were patients at the clinic and the others included a doctor and a clinic manager. This attack makes it the second one in a little over two weeks and the third one this year on drug rehab centers in the city. When this attack the city of Ciudad and the rest of Mexico were celebrating the country’s “Cry of Independence”, which marks the battle cry for when Mexico begin the Independence War with Spain. The celebration was held under very tight security measures.
It surprised me to find another article about another attack on a drug rehab center in Ciudad because this is what I had reported on in the first current event. It also saddened me to read the article because innocent lives are being taken at the hand of drug cartels because of “turf wars”. Violence in Mexico is ridiculous and outrageous. As I was reading the article, I began to wander did the celebration have anything to do with it? Probably so, because the gunmen knew that the security would not be focused on them but focused on maintaining control at the celebration. Hopefully, one day the attacks on the drug rehab centers will stop.
