17 Patients Killed in Shooting at Mexican Drug Rehab Center

On yesterday, gunmen shot and killed 17 patients and wounded two others in a Mexican drug rehab center. The mayor of Ciudad Juarez, Jose Ferriz, believes that these killings were gang related and that is the reason why these men were shot and killed. While talking with reporters, the mayor compared this shooting to one that happened in March, in which 20 people were killed. Also on yesterday, the number two security official in the city was also shot and killed. Since Mexico elected a new president in 2006, a wave of violence has occurred there. Last year alone they had the highest slayings per capita than other city in the world. Also since he was elected, more than 11,000 people have died because he has declared war on drug cartels. Of those 11,000, more than 1,000 have been police or security officers. Much of this violence is due to two main drug cartels, Sinaloa and Juarez. They both are trying to bring drugs into the United States and to put more drugs in the streets in Juarez.

When I read the title of this article, I kind of knew it had something to do with gangs or drug cartels. But what surprised me about the article is the amount of killing that takes place in that city. Why do people feel the need to kill others? Does killing solve anything? No it does not, in my opinion, it only makes the situation worst. Now that one of the groups has attacked the other, the other group now feels like it has to retaliate. So now it is just going to be an ongoing cycle, attack after attack and killings after killings. This is not just an international problem, this happens in the United States as well as right here in Greensboro. It is a very sad and vicious cycle but until someone steps in and stops it, it will continue to be a vicious cycle.

The article was really good. The crime rate in Mexico and even Central America is something that rarely gets talked about in the U.S.
