Big Jump in South Africa Sex offences
This article addresses the concern in the rise in crime in South Africa. Although the murder rate has decreased 3%, this is still nearly 18,000 killings per year which puts it at one of the highest in the world. Not only is murder an issue, but sexual offences have risen 10%. A concern the article touches on is the 2010 Football World Cup. Although there will be plenty of security, this is the first time this event has been hosted on the continent and there is an expected tens of thousands of extra foreigners. Robberies are another area of crime in which has increase. Business thefts have increased by almost 41%. Prime Minister Nkosinathi Mthethwa and other officials say they are taking measures to fight against crime but if underlying problems continue to exist, crime will not let up.
These underlying problems are populist measures that commentaries are concerned about. It is scary to hear about the rise in crime in South Africa. Although murder is down 3% and street robbery is down 7%, sexual offences, burglaries, business robberies are all up at least 10 %. Sometimes it is hard to relate to another countries crime rate because we feel it has nothing to do with us but when you think about it we all influence each other. Another countries crime rate also affects us when you think about all the people who travel there. Those people are at risk of these crimes just like the people who live there.
