In this article, Brazil's response to the welfare of its HIV/AIDS inflicted citizens is hailed as one of the most promising in the world. In 1996, Brazil began providing government-funded anti-retroviral treatment to those with HIV/AIDS and has since been known as a world leader in the disease's prevention. The program has, unfortunately, been facing challenges in recent years. While the treatment has been working, the program was originally meant to be a short term mode of treatment for a relatively small group of citizens. Treatment required often lasts a much longer time than at first anticipated. In addition, patients with chronic cases of HIV/AIDS are facing multiple health risks that do not fall under the program's jurisdiction of treatment. One of the major problems these patients face is heart disease, which often leads to death.
When many news stories today are reporting the discrimintation of HIV/AIDS patients, it is wonderful to hear a story telling of a country that is trying to help these individuals, rather than shun them. Although I think Brazil's program is a good one and should certainly be used as an example for other nations, I am surprised that the Brazilian government has had the resources and finances to treat these individuals for so long and to have made such progress in the prevention of HIV/AIDS within its borders. It seems to me that economics alone, not to mention the many superstitions and prejudice surrounding the issue, would prevent most countries from taking such leaps to treat its HIV/AIDS patients. I think, if anything else, nations should look to Brazil as an inspiring leader and work together to fight a disease that is present in every part of the world.
