The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the world crisis with the H1N1 virus has reached the pandemic level. With the coming of the winter months and the beginning of the flu season, there will be an increased amount of new cases of the swine flu. Nations are scrambling to obtain as many vaccines as they can and the underdeveloped countries believe they are going to suffer because they don’t have the money to buy them. Pharmaceutical companies are doing their best to sell and donate their extra vaccines to these countries to stifle the onslaught of new cases that are expected to happen. WHO believes in the next two years two billion, one-third of the world’s population, will become infected with the swine flu virus. Pregnant mothers and people with conditions like asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders should consider getting a vaccination because they are at the most risk.
I am surprised by how much this virus has spread. When I first heard of the swine flu, all I knew was that it originated in Mexico. Now, everyone around the world is terrified of catching it. Many lives have been lost for this virus to become a pandemic and even more are being predicted to occur has the year advances. The need for vaccines in underdeveloped countries is going to be larger than ever and other nations and pharmaceutical companies need to find a way to get to these people. Just because they cannot afford it doesn’t mean their lives are worth any less. Honestly, I believe they need it more than we do because our living conditions are much better than theirs will ever be. We should learn to help others before ourselves.
