President Barack Obama announced his plan to reform the US immigration policy; this is an issue that New Jersey political strategist Mike Baker has been demanding action for, over the years. Other lawmakers such as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has called it “un-American” and Congressman Luis Guttierez labeled the Border Patrol and ICE agents “the Gestapo” (the official secret police of Nazi Germany). The article goes on to give statistics of illegal aliens make up 27 percent of the US prison and jail population. Thus putting a strain on tax payers in high incarceration states, because only 25 percent of expenses for imprisoning the criminals are reimbursed by the federal government to the state and local governments. Some have argued that are some benefits to allowing an open border, using the amount of taxes that illegal immigrants have to pay. On the contrary however, most are paid “off the books”, therefore are not taxed. Some say that we don’t have a need for new laws; we just have a lack of enforcement on the laws. It all equals up to immigration and illegal aliens being a steady problem in this country.
Illegal aliens have been an issue steadily on the rise in America. I somewhat agree with the notion that we don’t need new laws, and that we just need to enforce what is already in place. In this country we tend to “fix” things that aren’t really broken, meaning that if something is not going our way then we should discard and come up with a new plan. But Americans tend to be all talk on the issue, they want a reform but they don’t anything to ensure the results they want. I also agree that the cost of imprisoning illegal aliens and treating them in hospitals has become a financial burden. I have always been advocate of human rights. Just because a person doesn’t have documentation doesn’t mean that do not deserve some type of medical treatment. As far jailing illegal criminals, I feel that the smart thing to do would be to deport them back to their home and actually have some type of border control to prevent re-enter. The only reason I don’t feel that way about all immigrants is because there are some who actually are here to create a better life for themselves and their family. This an issue that we haven’t heard the last of, all we can do is hope that our elected officials do something to contain it, I don’t believe for a second that we can stop it.
