In the southwest city of Chongquing, the investigation of six district police chiefs is still in progress. The six police officers are on suspicion of protecting local gangs in a major crackdown on crime. The gangs the police were covering for were involved with illegal casinos, loan sharking and extortion. The official China Daily reported the six are suspected of being “protective umbrellas”. For the past two months Chongqing has been running a campaign against gangs. So far 1,544 suspects have been investigated, including average wealthy business people. In China corruption is a widespread problem. This sparks public anger that includes violent protests. China Newsweek magazine said that by the end of July the number of police officers that were being investigated went up to 502.

I think it is ridiculous that there so many crooked cops. I mean what is the point of being the cop if you are also protecting the bad guy. I think they are a disgrace to the police force and should be put in jail. It just makes it seem like no one is good. If the cops are supposed to be protecting us and instead protecting the bad guy then how are we ever going to get help when we need it? Everywhere we turn we think we would be safe because there is a cop down the street, but what if one day we really need the help and he actually doesn’t want to help us. Then what?
