On Wednesday, September 8, 2009, a Mexican plane was hijacked. The plane, which was heading to Mexico City from Cancun, was hijacked by a Bolivian born who was carrying a Bible. The man, whose name is Jose Flores, asked to speak with President Felipe Calderon after hijacking the plane on takeoff. According to a security minister, Flores said that, “he is a minister and that it was a divine revelation that made him carry out this action”. The plane eventually landed in Mexico City where the passengers were allowed off but not the crew. The passengers did not know what was going on until they unboarded the plane and saw the police storm the plane. A few minutes later, Flores was led off the airplane in handcuffs and was arrested without a struggle. At first, nine people were detained but they were later released when the police realized that they were just passengers caught up in the drama.
When I began reading this article, I laughed. I laughed because who hijacks a plane carrying a Bible? To me that was funny and unheard of. As I read through the article, I learned that the hijacker was a minister. I thought to myself, “Did his higher belief to tell him to hijack a plane and risk over a hundred people’s lives”? Probably not, he just wanted attention and he got just not in a good way. I do not understand why people commit such outlandish crimes and then they expect not to be reprimanded for it. Crime in Mexico is ridiculous and I can’t wait to see what next week’s current event will have in store for me!
