Slayings of 4 Guatemalan prison officials blamed on drug trade

The war on drugs continues as 4 Guatemalan prison officials are gunned down. The drug trade continues to claim lives as drug cartels want to prove that they are the ones who are in control. Problem is Samuel Logan (expert on Latin America gangs) seems to think; Cental America is pinned between Columbia and Mexico. "Geography and an incompentant corrupt government puts Guatemala at the top of the list to be an area for high drug traffic." Killed in the attack were an assistant prison director, a wardone, and two prison guards. The attacks were said to have been well planned says many sources. And probably was a response to many high risk inmates (many part of the gangs) being transferred to higher security facilities. The attacks happened in three separate areas, at three different times. The 2010 budget shows reduced funds for anti crime and with lack of funding and resources situations such as these seem to only be able to get worst.
It seems that partial blame goes to the corrupt government that is in place in Guatemala and partial blame to the unfortunate geography. With lack of resources it is hard and will prove to be an even tougher struggle to maintain safety and order. It is sad that these gangs have the ability to cripple societies and violence occurs so often that it no longer alarms civilians who sometimes get caught in the crossfire. What will it take for these countries to invest more funding to protect their civilians who fuel their economies and less on less drastic measures of spending.
