Thin Thighs May Signal Heart Disease, Early Death

People with naturally thin thighs may be at greater risk for developing heart disease and dying an early death. Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and researchers have been looking for clues to whom is most vulnerable for years. People with the thinnest thighs have been researched to have two times a greater risk of having heart disease and the risk rose as the thigh size declined. They say the thinner the thigh the less muscle mass which can affect fat and metabolism. The risk remained even after the researcher's took into account the volunteer's weight, lifestyle, stomach fat, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other factors that include heart disease.

I find this article very interesting. I knew that heart disease was the leading cause of death in the world, but I thought it would be due to high cholesterol or fat. Never did I think that the size of your thighs could have an impact on having heart disease. If you are concerned that your thighs are too skinny it is hard to help that. Usually people that have naturally thin thighs cannot easily gain weight just in their thighs. So what would be the suggestion to gaining weight in your thighs? Should someone eat more, and then wouldn't that be unhealthy? This is a hard thing to prevent or help if you have thin thighs and is kind of a scary thought. I know they are looking at ways to help this but I feel like it maybe a hard thing to prevent or cure.

Personally, I think this is very interesting. Who would believe thin thighs would be a culprit of heart disease even with the supporting information of fat and metabolism. I thought it would be just the opposite actually. It is allowing me to embrace my thighs a little more.

I find this very interesting yet somewhat confusing. You would think that if you have heavy or obese legs you might be at risk for a heart attack or stroke, not that if you have fit or thin thighs you may contract heart disease and early death. This is a shocker to me, I agree with you Chelsea.

Wow, This is such a strange article. I couldn't imagine having thin thighs would lead to heart disease. Being an Exercise and sports science major, I have always heard my professors talk about obesity and I've even done a few obesity projects myself. I'm just guessing, but maybe the increased heart disease risk could be because if you have thin thighs you could be more likely to be underweight? Which is also dangerous. Maybe the girls with thinner thighs were anorexic or just had low body weight which leads to heart disease? Just my guesses. Interesting. Thanks for posting.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the nation's single leading cause of death for both men and women. At least 58.8 million people in this country suffer from some form of heart disease.

And on the whole, cardiovascular diseases (the combination of heart disease and stroke) kill some 950,000 Americans every year.
Still, there are many misconceptions about heart disease: "The biggest misconception is that heart disease only happens to the elderly," said Elizabeth Schilling, CRNP with the Center for Preventive Cardiology Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

In fact, according to the American Heart Association, almost 150,00 Americans killed by cardiovascular disease each year are under the age of 65. And one out of every 20 people below the age of 40 has heart disease.

So, it is now a wise decision to keep a constant monitoring of your health. Why to take a chance if we have the option. I was in the similar misconception that heart disease are far away waiting for me to get aged. But to my surprise, I was found to be having a calcium deposit in my coronary arteries. I need to have my advance diagnostic scans due reassure whether something really deadly is waiting for me. Though it was some dreadful going on in my life, but I never felt any kind of discomfort in Elitehealth.com advanced diagnostic facility. They were having some of the latest diagnostic equipments and non invasive techniques which made me feel safe.

This sounds kind of ridiculous. When you think of people with heart disease, the person is usually obese and would be a lot larger all the way around. Its odd that someone with small thighs would be more likely to have it. Interesting story.

I think the best way to gain weight anywhere on your body for any reason is to do what athletes do, build muscle. Muscle mass is used to help metabolism and fight fat. If a person were to just start going for runs on a regular routine and then drink or eat something high in protein they would see results. Yes some people do have a high metabolism and it id hard to gain weight in just eating everyday things but if a person were to workout with the sense of building muscle mass to gain weight the should see results. This could be the best healthy way to deal with this problem. Increasing the health in your peripheral arteries and veins is the one way the help avoid heart disease and this would be the way to do that. I think that is what this study was based on was peripheral artery health. Seeing how this condition is related to heart disease and how the risks increase for heart disease with this condition.

Wow this is truly unbelievable. But I don't think the article is saying that skinny people with skinny thighs are prone to heart disease. I think it's saying that if your thighs are thin in comparison to what is normal for your weight. Then you might be prone to heart disease. That would mean that this doesn't just apply to think people. Either way though it is a strange thought. Who knew!?
