Turkey, Armenia edge towards peace deal

.:SUMMARY:.

There is a long list of historical and political issues between these Turkey and Armenia. Long time issues came to the forefront in 1993 when Turkey sided with its ally Azerbijan over the Nagarno-Karabakh War by completely closing its borders with Armenia. Tensions were made worse by later pipeline and infrastructure projects that bypassed Armenia, and Armenia’s controversial decision to re-commission the dangerously outdated Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant just 16 km from Turkey’s border. This long time feud between these two nations may soon be coming to an end. Earlier this year the foreign ministries of the two countries said that they would begin talks for formal diplomatic recognition. Even more recently these countries have announced a tentative peace deal that will be mediated by the Swiss. This decision has mixed reviews between politicians.

.:REACTION:.

I believe that is great that peace is spreading through some parts of the planet. Holding onto past tradition of not being diplomatic with each other is an outdated practice. The fact that two nations that have been feuding for ages can settle their differences and become diplomatic with each other gives hope to the world that one day there may be peace. I support this decision and hope that all goes well between Turkey and Armenia.

I think its great that more countries are opening up to peace talks, especially those with such long-standing histories of animosity. It proves that differences can be overcome and that open-mindedness is a must in a global community.
