U.N. Report: Human Trafficking Likely to Rise Due to Economic Decline

Joy Ngozi Ezeilo a human rights lawyer and professor at the University of Nigeria, expressed concern that trafficking is still going on in the world and he would like to see it stop. She said the root cause of all of this is that the root causes are not being addressed and the victims are becoming desperate. When people get caught she said that most of the people are illegal and are detained, charged, prosecuted, or deported. Ezeilo says that if shouldn’t be this way. The true way to help these people is to see them through the progress and help them as needed instead of just sent back to where they will probably get back into the trafficking industry. Ezeilo also says in this article that the governments of these countries aren’t doing their job because many of them didn’t even respond when she sent around a survey about human trafficking.
I was actually shocked when I read this article because I didn’t realize the extent of human trafficking around the world, the fact that it’s still going on is amazing to me considering the fact that a lot of laws have been passed about it. I can’t really speak on other countries but I’m sure that their people are tired of the many issues that come up from this issue. This article makes me ask the question of why, why do people do this to other people and what brings them pleasure from making other people suffer. I just think that human trafficking is wrong and should hold no place in society. I believe that governments should have tougher penalties for this kind of thing to deter people that do it. The victims that are in this trade I feel bad for because they were probably forced into it and that’s just not right.
