US has released funds in effort to help support Mexico's war on drugs. This plan is called The Merida Initiative which over the course of three years will aid Mexico with 1.4 billion dollars. This aid will help with training tactics, helicopters, and providing new technology to help the Mexican law enforcement get a handle and crackdown on drug cartels. The initiative is supported favorably because no other Mexican leader has taken on the drug cartel frontally per President Calderon. These efforts on the war on drugs is much needed and is coming with much success as well as much resistance. Since the president has taken office in 2006 he and his officials have seized tons of drugs (literally), weapons and have detained 80,000 people linked to organized crimes including the drug trade. The drug cartels are showing much resistance by claiming the lives of 1,000 police and soldiers since the crackdown began. Drug gang violence has also increased and claimed the lives of 13,500. With continuing efforts of Mexico's government and the aid of the US things should be steadily improving.
Cracking down on drug trade and trafficking is an excellent effort by Mexico's President Felipe Calderon. Although he is seeing much resistance(which comes with the territory) I believe his efforts will positively effect the safety and well being of Mexico's people. I do not know if i necessarily agree with the US aiding Mexico. I have nothing against aiding countries, however it seems the US always has it's nose in some other countries business. We do not tend to IMPORTANT matters in our own country that seem to me like first priority. Even though drug trafficking and drug crimes can affect our country also I feel that in our recessing economy those funds can be used to aid our own people, in more ways than one.

I'm with you on the fact that I'm not so sure the US should be sending its money away when we have so many issues here in the US that need to be taken care of. However as this problem does affect us, we should be doing something (perhaps not $214 million somethings).
I agree...it seems like we have enough problems of our own, including drug problems here in the US, to be sending that much money (that we don't have) away to other ocuntries.
Yes, I agree that the US spends too much money on foreign affairs rather than dealing with whats going on in our own country!!And $214 million is way toooooooooo much!!
