Abortion down, Contraception up

Global abortion rates have gone down tremendously. The reason for this drop is the high number of married women using contraception worldwide. Pregnancy prevention has become better available and more accepted in society. Although this is good, unsafe abortions kill 70,000 women a year due to poor abortion laws. Africans are only 28% of married women who use contraception. Most abortions are done by the women themselves or traditional healers, where neither have any form of formal training. Abortion became legal in 1973. When there are strict laws against abortions it makes for procedures to become risker in place and methods. For the Netherlands, they ave the lowest abortion rate compared to the rest of the world (1% to 3%). The netherlands also have a low teen pregnancy rate also and it has been like this for many decades. The stress on sex education, discussion of sexuality in media, and easy access to contraception makes this possible. Abortion is the last resort. There is belief that abortion coverage in health reform should be guided my that of the dutch. It would be a great way to lower abortion rates.

Abortion is a very touchy subject. There are some for abortion and some against. This article doesn't discuss what goes on in the US but in other countries where women have better or lack of rights to having an abortion. In Africa there are many women who try to have abortions for various reasons. Because of their lack of hospitals or formal abortion clinics they have to do it themselves which becomes dangerous for the mother. The dangers are unseen to them, they are just trying to free themselves of their unborn child for a reason of their own. The Netherlands is a great example of what a country should do to change the way abortion is looked at. It all starts in the beginning. If a teen or women is taught sex education or abstinence then there would be less rates of abortions. It all comes down to how educated one is about sexual health.

I think this is great. I am not a fan of abortion, I'm not against it though because I feel like it's up to the indiviudal. However, I am very happy to hear that abortion rates are going down and that contraception is going up.
