Afghan War Draws Comparisons to Vietnam

The war in Afghanistan is becoming more and more similar to the Vietnam War every day. Although an entire half century later, the differences in these wars are hard to find. The people of America are becoming more disapproving of this war all the time. There haven’t been huge uprisings or protests against the war because now our military is all volunteers unlike during Vietnam when they had the draft. The government is corrupt in Afghanistan the same way that it was in Vietnam. The Taliban that we are hunting can flee to Pakistan where we are unable to pursue them the same way that the Viet-cong did to Cambodia and Laos. We want to send in more troops making it even more the same as Vietnam. Right now the only noticeable difference between the two wars is that not nearly as many American soldiers have died in Afghanistan yet.
I definitely see the similarities in these two wars and have for a long time. What is hard for me to believe is how it has taken this long for people to start pointing this out. Also in the article it is pointed out that there has not been a noticeable amount of protest of the war like there was in Vietnam. Instead it is sort of an apathy like, oh well the government will do what it will. We the people need to let ourselves be heard. We have this president right now that was elected because he apparently wants to work for the people. We need o let him know what we think and want. Michael Franti sings “This one’s nothing like Vietnam, except for the bullets, except for the bombs, except for the you that’s gone.” This to me sums up the article perfectly. We need to get out of this war before we do lose many more soldiers and that final factor makes this war completely identical with Vietnam.
