Bomber kills 5 at UN office in Pakistan

Joy Weems 10/5/09 7pm

A suicide bomber set off a bomb at the United Nations World Food Program Monday. The blast killed 5 people, and wounded 5 others according to U.N. officials. The attack was supposedly carried out by the Pakistani Taliban who said they would avenge the death of their leader, Baitullah Meshud. Meshud was killed by an US strike in August. The explosion happened in the lobby of the W.F.P. The building has high security with cameras, metal detectors, and armed security guards. Some people who gave statements felt that the security guards could have helped the bomber accomplish his goal. People felt safe with such extreme security measures but can not figure out how this bomber got in. The director of the W.F.P. says this is a tragedy for the whole humanitarian community and for the hungry. The W.F.P. food assistance is providing a life line to millions stated the director of the program Josette Sheeran. This is the worlds largest humanitarian agency.
The bombing is a very unfortunate event that took place today. It is unfortunate that these individuals who are avenging their leaders death are showing no mercy to innocent individuals who had nothing to do with the killing of their leader. It bothers me to see that people always find Innocent people to make victims. One individual who gave statement stated that he felt safe working there because of the high level of security but as we can see through the recent events of the day when people are on a mission they will stop at nothing to complete the task at hand. I am bothered because it seems the very places where people feel the most security are becoming places of vulnerability. It is also unfortunate that these bombers cared nothing about the mission of the agency, which is to feed millions of hungry people but more about their dead leader. People these days no matter what country it is in whatever part of the world it may be have lost the ability to distinguish between what is right and wrong.

It's so sad to me that people can't feel safe anymore just going to work in the morning. This bombing is retaliation, and that's the part that really scares me. The people who got killed did nothing wrong.
