In Guinea, women are being brutally beaten, raped, and murdered. It is thought that these attacks on women are part of a violent outburst that happened on September 28. Around fifty thousand demonstrators, who were unarmed, had gathered in a stadium when Guinean soldiers began to shoot and kill dozens of them. Many people who were interviewed said they saw numerous women being raped openly in the streets. However, the number of how many women have been raped or murdered in Guinea is unknown because it is shameful there to be associated with being a victim of sexual violence. The victims are also scared to come forward because they fear the Guinean soldiers will seek revenge on them.
I found this particular article to be somewhat difficult to read because of all the personal accounts that were mentioned. There were numerous mentions in the article of interviews with people who recounted their own experiences in either being the victim of the rapes or beatings, or looking around and seeing the results of the attacks lying out around them in the streets. It reminded me a lot of the video "Rape in the Congo" that we watched in class. For the soldiers to focus their aggression and attacks on women specifically so as to get back at the men they were fighting against sounds really familiar.
