This week in India seventeen Indian police officers were killed by Maoist rebels. One being a high ranking commander. The Maoists are fighting for the rights of the poor and and for their own land. Thousands of people have been killed by the rebel movement since the 60’s. The violence has not stopped, and has only gotten more gruesome. Last weekend 16 villagers were killed by rebels and one Indian police officer was captured and beheaded. Indian government officials have told the rebels to “stop the killings or prepare for a major attack from the Indian police”.
Like so many other violent movements, the minority ethnic group is lashing out against what they feel is oppressing them. When groups feel like they are not being heard, and their needs are not being recognized, they turn to violence to get the attention of the government. I feel hopeless when I read about situations like this in other countries until I remember our own history. Slowly the minorities in our country have moved from oppression to equality. It is still a work in progress even in societies that are developed.
