Sixteen years ago, the Navy began allowing women to serve on board surface combat ships and now they are considering allowing women to serve on board submarines. Officials have said that the top leaders of the Pentagon have been considering the option for two weeks now and if it is decided on, women could be serving on board submarines before 2011. Officials have also said that paperwork is being drawn up to change the policy that is currently in place, which prohibits women from serving on submarines. After they are finished with the paperwork, approval will be needed from Defense Secretary Robert Gates and then Congress will have to decide if they wish to block the legislation from coming into action or not.
Although this may seem like a pretty simple topic, in reality there is a really heated debate. Those who do not support changing the policy, back their side by stating that there is a very limited amount of room on these submarines so the women who would go to work on them would be in extremely close proximity of the men that currently serve on board them. They also think that it would lead to a rise in sexual harassment cases. I personally think that this would be a great opportunity for women to be treated more like equals in the workplace and it would be a shame to let it pass by. By changing the current policy and allowing women to serve aboard submarines, the United States would be somewhat paving the way for other countries too. There are countries that do currently allow women to serve on board their submarines, but the numbers of those countries is few.
