Civil society groups in Southeast Asia want the full implementation of human rights and other reforms before the summit at the end of the month in Thailand. The group that wants this done is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This group wants all of the social and economic issues addressed because they have basically been put on the backburner for a while. Under the new reforms, civil society groups are now able to hold talks with major government officials of certain countries in order to get their point across for issues they feel are important. Some of the issues that the leaders want to raise is the impact of climate change on communities and the effect investment projects would have in Burma and other countries.
I think this is very important for countries to have. If you can’t talk to your government then the country basically becomes run by a select group of people without any say from anyone else, and that’s not right. I agree with some of the issues that the civil group is discussing with the people in power because they are very important issues that affect a lot of people. I also think that summit that they have is good because it shows that the government takes into consideration some of the needs of the people instead of just trying to make it into a dictatorship.
