CBS news reported on the mistreatment of women in Afghanistan, those in hospitals and in prison. Apparently, according to Dr. Massouda Jalal (former Minister for Women's Affairs, who was fired for being too progressive) the new constitution provides for women's rights and freedom to work, travel alone, and dress themselves, however they are not being enforced. Women are still being put in jail by husbands whenever they say the word, beaten once they are there, and girls are being attacked on their way to school.
While I am gravely upset by the continued abuses against women in Afghanistan, especially at their husbands hands, I was particularly upset about the dismissal of Dr. Jalal. The plight of women in Afghanistan will not improve without a voice for them in government and they had one who was "too progressive!" In my opinion, there's no such thing as too progressive in a post-Taliban government.
