This week President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton offered up dueling opinions regarding the state of the drug war in Mexico and it's overall impact on the country at large.
Mrs. Clinton suggested that the ever heightening blood feud over controlled territory by the numerous drug cartel operations, has taken Mexico into a state much reminiscent of Columbia during the 1980's. During that time up into the earl 1990's drug cartel king pins the likes of Pablo Escobar were believed to control upwards of half of Columbia in coordination with the revolutionary para military group FARC. In Clinton's opinion the ever increasing violence, rampant corruption of the Mexican Police force have the country of Mexico in a truly dire situation. Many now believe the possibility of the Mexican government totally losing control isn't that far from a plausible reality. President Clinton responded back quickly in interviews with the Mexican press by stating that despite the troubling situation in Mexico it can not be compared to the plight of Columbia in the 1980's. Mr. Obama stated several reasons why the two situations are vastly dissimilar, most importantly he stated that Mexico has a much more developed economy that is still growing today and that it is a country on the way up in the world despite serious difficulties.
