According to a study presented by Dr. Stacey Jolly and her team of researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Medicine Institute conducted experiments that showed that African Americans are at a higher risk of dying or being diagnosed some sort of cardiovascular disease or stroke that Whites in the age range of 35-45. They tested for not only for a history of heart attacks and heart failure or strokes but activities and deficits that lead up to it. After testing for factors such as income and access to healthcare, smoking, high blood pressure and obesity they found 28% of African Americans deaths were caused through some sort of heart problem before 65 while only 13% showed heart issues playing a role in deaths of White individuals. Even at the 35-44 age range under 2% of White have been diagnosed with heart disease while just under 4% of African Americans have been. Its over twice as many but the reports in the Black community but doctors believe its not too late to take preventative measures. Just some exercise on a regular basis, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating a balanced diet while avoiding smoking will set up African Americans to substantially this number in the future.
In reaction to this story I must say I was truly inspired to work harder to keep myself from falling in to that category. Being that I myself am an African American 34 is an extremely young age to be dealing with heart issues and I don't want to have to worry about watching what i do because a stroke or heart attack could happen at any point in time. In the article it stated in the age group of 45-54 cardiovascular disease could be found present in 111 Blacks per 100000 people and only 47 in Whites which is well above half. I hope these numbers are brought to the public's attention soon to keep this number from rising.
