INDIA'S CITIES GROW FAST,DEVELOP SLOW

christine brown
India's financial capitol,Mumbai, is jam packed with nearly 20 million people in its blighted areas and company buildings. This makes the city less and less appealing to investors. It is estimated that within 20 years, 40% of India's people will live in cities which will open up about 70% of new jobs. If this prediction happens, India will need to come up with over a trillion dollars. Also within the next 20 years, India will race its way to more urbanization at a rate that has never been seen before, except in China. In India, cellphones are more common than toilets. A reporter reports, "across all major quality-of-life indicators, India's cities fall well short of delivering even a basic standard of living".Over half of Mumbai's population is homeless and that very city is "home" to some of the world's most expensive real estate. In 2005, the government devised an urban renewal project. This was developed to improve infrastructure, revamp archaic land and property laws, and make over 60 cities self governing. Unfortunately, not much improvement has been made since the plan was first developed.

I will be the first to say that I don't know much at all about big talking politics and the economy. I usually find it quite boring and change the channel or turn my attention elsewhere. When I began reading this article, I was a little upset. How can one city have 60% of its population without a stable home, yet have some of the most expensive homes in the world??? We all hear of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, but this is ridiculous. I think the government should use some of the money that they are spending on building those expensive homes on government housing for the homeless. I don't know if they have things like welfare and section 8 in India, but with the homeless population being that large in a city that's continuing to grow is crazy.
