The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR,) in coordination with the Sri Ramachandra Medical University (SRU), is behind the first ever research on pollution's side effects on the health of individuals in India. The study is going to take about 5 years to complete. It will look into pollution as far as 10 years back focusing on various kinds of pollution, such as cigarette smoke, criteria pollutants and other air toxins. Some 1,200 pregnant women and their children will be studied regarding maternal and early childhood outcomes in connection with pollutant exposure. Other adult chronic diseases, such as chronic cardiovascular diseases, will be studied with the participation of about 3,600 adults.

I am thrilled to see India taking initiative to study the side effects of various air pollutants on their population. The results, although they will not be available for a few years, should be generalizable to other populations which would hopefully increase the knowledge base of the harmful effects of pollution. It is so important for countries all over the world to study and contribute their findings on pollution-related problems to increase public health awareness and make people aware of the dangers of pollution. I was surprised to find that India has not already contributed to any of the research on the effects of pollution, but it must be taken into consideration that it is a nation that has developed significantly in the past decade. Their upcoming research contribution will likely be one of many in the future, as the results will undoubtedly shed light on the importance of this issue in our global society.
