Canada Produces Strain of Algae for Fuel

Ocean Nutrition Canada, a supplier of omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acid supplements, stumbled upon a type of algae that is “capable of producing oil at a rate 60 times greater than other types of algae being used for the generation of biofuels.” Although Canada does not have the ideal climate for optimum growth of this type of algae they are looking into areas near the equator to grow the algae. With such an immense discovery, ONC will head a four year consortium. Also, ONC has caught the attention of military contractor Lockheed Martin and UOP, a division of Honeywell, with a focus of converting algal oil into an alternative jet fuel.

This is a great find not only for alternative energy but for the environment and agriculture as well . Algae are huge consumers of carbon dioxide. Growing more algae can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also, there is no need for land when cultivating algae. This means there would be more corn for eating rather than putting it in your gas tank.

I agree that this a great discovery. This way we will have alternative energy as well as help the environment and agriculture. This would be good if we could convert algal oil into an alternative jet fuel.

This amazing discovery. Very soon, we run out of the oil, so we should find an alternative to the oil. Algae that can produce oil at the rate of 60 times of the other types of algae. If more investment be place in this area, researchers could increase even the rate of production of the oil even in this specific type of algae.

I felt like this is wonderful way to start helping the environment. And this is a good way to start trying to find a alternative way to help save oil.
