This current events article is discussing the crime in Wales. The title states that their rates have fallen 9%, dropping to 215, 076 crimes in the past year. There was a decrease in robbery, car crimes, and criminal damage. However, sexual offenses rose by 1%. The force used by police officers in South Wales dropped 13.3%, 9% in Dyfed-Powys, 6% in North Wales, and Gwent stayed constant, not dropping any. This places South Wales in the posistion of being the ninth most improved for reducing crime and the most improved force to reduce sexual offenses in both Wales and England. "Our staff should take great pride in knowing that they have helped to bring crime in South Wales down to its lowest level since 1985", says Deputy Chief Constable Colette Paul of the South Wales Police. While South Wales dropped in sexual offenses, Dyfed-Powys and Gwent saw a 15% increase. They say that they believe the increase is because victims are more comfortable in reporting the crime than in the past. Overall the article was a good one. It covered the basics of the topic, provided proof, and used quotes form police officers. There was also a graph demonstrating the crime figures in June 2009-10. This helped me to understand and to have a better look on the figures. The only thing that I think the article should include are reasons why people (police officers) believe that crimes are decreasing. My belief is that the forces are growing stronger as technology is growing. Many people don't realize that police officers are a huge part of keeping an area safe and structured. This can be a social issue because crime rates vary in different areas around the world. Some rates are increasing because of the excuse of "desperation in times of unemployment", while others are decreasing as areas are becoming more strict and structured.
