How to protect yoru home while traveling

I chose this article because it talks about how to protect your home while you are traveling. Since it is getting close to the Holidays, people will be traveling a lot more than normal. The first advice is to "prepare in advance." The article says that if you are planning on installing a new home security system, to do it well in advance to be able to become familiar with it. It also says that as far as your mail goes, the best option is to allow a trusted neighbor it retrieve it for you. This is a good idea because bills, checks, and personal information can come through the mail and if it is overloading in your mailbox, someone could easily swipe it. The next piece of advice is to "make sure you're not an easy target." This basically tells the reader to make your home look "lived" in. This is a good idea because it may make the burglar think that you are still there. "Compare security products" tells the reader to compare home security systems to see which has the top reviews and such. "Prevent fire and flood risks" talks about ways to prevent a fire or flood from damaging your home. Lastly, "Don't broadcast your plans" tells the reader not to let everyone know where you are going. I agree with the article here that putting your plans on Facebook isn't such a good idea. This article is a good one that everyone should read. I think that they should include a diagram or statistics of how much crime rates increase over the holidays. These sound like really good ideas that may help to protect your home. "Crime definitely increases during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays; we see a major spike", is a disturbing statement. The holidays are supposed to be filled with joy, love, and family, but instead we have to worry about this social problem that occurs all over the world around holidays.

If this article really works on preventing burglary, it is not a good idea to let everybody know about it because then it will not work. I believe that burglary (and in fact all other crimes) evolves with the criminals' experience. If everyone uses the ways suggested in the article, then the thieves will develop a new technique to tackle it soon, just like everybody is using anti-dotes to combat a particular virus--the virus soon become resistant to the anti-dote.
The best way to prevent burglary should be written in principles and its form should vary on individual basis.
Do you agree?

I totally agree with the previous comment! Articles like this one do help the homeowners, but they may also help the burglars. Also, people who live alone really shouldn't post on their Facebook when they're leaving and how long they will be gone. That information may be going out to people they don't know.

I think this is a great idea. As I watch the news every year around the Holidays I don't know how many sections are on how to protect your home. Even at my apartment complex they post " Check Lists" to prevent burglary during the holidays. In fact the serviceman goes around to every apartment and check to see if our windows are closed and locked. It's that bad which is extremely sad during the holidays

I also agree with you, Hing Min. Articles like this show the criminal information that could help them to come up with new techniques to break into homes.

I agree that this article does help criminals, but unfortunetly, there are some stupid people in this world that need articles like this to know what to do when going out of town. So its hard to know who will benefit.
