This month began a sixth month trial to determine whether or not London's streets will be treated with a Calcium Magnesium Acetate mixture to help reduce air pollution in the area. The idea is that the solution would cause pollutants to actually stick to the pavement, instead of being released into the air. While many are in favor of the idea, some still criticize saying it is only a quick fix or a way to offset pollution. It is not a solution to the pollution. One such person is Simon Birkett, the founder of CCAL (Campaign for Clean Air in London). He feels people need to learn to make a real change -to take public transportation, walk, etc. Air pollution in the United Kingdom is a major problem with 50,00o deaths yearly attributed to it.
I think the idea is a good one, though it is of course not perfect, While I understand Birkett's opinion, I feel something happening is better than nothing happening. Unfortunately, it seems it will take some time before a real social movement will occus to go green in our transportation. However, there is always the fear that moving pollution (having it trapped to the ground) will cause new problems -maybe with water sources, etc. It is certainly something that should be thoroughly researched before being implemented.

Long term solution is what London needs beside other polluting countries. There should be more investment in educating people about how polluting the air is very costly. It is mentioned in the article that about 50,000 people are dying each year in London alone because of air pollution.
Pollution is a big topic to challenge and you have to approach it at every angle possible. There should be more laws in the future but any enforcement will help.
This is terrible, why would a the government just let 50,000 people die each year because of air pollution; and that's just one city. I believe that is extremely poor on the government's part because that's just sorry. They should put more money into programs to help with the pollution, but lay down some laws atleast with a little bit of restrictions.
The article actually says 50,000 deaths yearly for the UK, not just in london.
