One Million Israelis Now Have Diabetes

In the last week, Israel have just released a statement that over one million Israelis now have diabetes or symptoms of metabolic syndrome which is a precursor to diabetes. Professor Itamar Raz, who is the chairman of the National Diabetes Council and head of the Diabetes unit at Hadassah University Medical Center states, “Every serving of junk foods shortens the life of Israelis.” A Boston University study that has been going on for 10 years has found that long term consumption of junk foods such as fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, and other high calorie, high fat, processed foods significantly increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes. In many cases Type 2 diabetes can be prevented with a switch to a more healthy diet and regular exercise. Every year, approximately 2,500 Israelis die of complications from diabetes. Those complications are usually consist of blindness, limb amputation, heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. With careful control of sugar and blood pressure a person can reduce the risk of these complications. Experts say that between 30 and 40 percent of all adults will develop diabetes at some point in their lives due to lack of exercise, poor diet, and obesity.

After reading this story I was not at all surprised at the number of people with diabetes. Like we have discussed in class, diabetes is a rising epidemic in many countries all around the world. With all the fast foods and junk people have access to, its no wonder that diabetes rates are increasing. This would be considered a social global problem because it is affecting millions of people in different countries. All that it would take to begin solving this problem would be for people to start changing their diets and exercise. People have been warned and know what to do to prevent diabetes, but they never seem to listen and before they know it, its going to be too late.

I think that Diabetes is a growing epidemic around the world and its becoming more and more deadly. More children are being diagnosed because parents aren't paying more attention to children diets and people are learning they have diabetes at a later time. Diabetes test need to be done every time someone visits the doctor so that it can be detected earlier.

Yeah I wasn't really surprised either. These lifestyle diseases are spreading as we enter new ages.
