Azerbaijan a mainly Shiite Muslim country, which for decades was under strict Soviet rule has recently emerged as one of the most secular states in the Islamic world. However in recent weeks the country has been put on the global stage. Why? Because a school within the country has now placed a ban on women wearing a hijab, a religious headscarf. In recent weeks there have been hundreds of protests calling for the ban to be removed. "We'd rather die than give up the hijab!" shout the protesters in the streets. Many have said that this has interfered with divine law and is a violation of religious rights. Many have said in the past that Azerbaijan is the epitome of religious tolerance in a country, however with this new ban in place many are being to question that.
I think this is a very tricky subject. While I do believe that their should be tolerance for everyone regardless of religion, race, etc, this seems to be different from other stories you normally hear. I tried researching this particular to find out whether or no these schools were private. I was unable to find that information however I did learn that at the these schools the students are to adhere by a strict school uniform. Within the uniform guidelines it is clearly stated that wearing a hijab is not allowed. However the country of Azerbaijan is predominately Muslim, so it really is hard to say whose "right." I think that they take it to a vote and see what it's citizens what, if they disagree then they should get rid of the ban. That is the only fair way to decide.
