This current event comes from the United Kingdom. NOTW or News of the World is accused of phone hacking -including deputy prime minister Lord Prescott's phone. NOTW is a Sunday tabloid in the UK. Scotland Yard believes they have enough evidence to press criminal charges. The new evidence is a series of emails from Ian Edmonson- a news editor. They received this from NOTW's parent company, News International. Private investigators, Clive Goodman and Glenn Mulcaire were the only ones prosecuted initially; but there wasn't any strong evidence . Now, since the investigation stated this Wednesday (January 26, 2011), is the first time they've had evidence that has a good chance of being used in court "admissible evidence". More people are coming forward to testify as witnesses. It's rare when Scotland Yard discussed the details of an investigation; the senior figures of the Mediterranean Police (which I'm assuming is a faction of Scotland Yard) is facing much criticism about broadcasting things about the case. In addition to that it took them a year to address the problem at NOTW to which Mr. John Yates (deputy commissioner) answers, "If I appear tetchy it was because I was being expected to act upon facts that in no way could have developed into evidence." They also have face scrutiny about the lack of prosecutions; witnesses say phone hacking was "commonplace" at NOTW. There are complaints about the way the Mediterranean Police and media are doing their jobs. Many people are asking for more transparency. Yes, more transparency on a private case, a case about a violation of privacy. Isn't that ironic?
