Richard "Dickie" Dehmer, age 75, has been accused of running an illegal gambling operation and collecting debts with threats and violence. The Springfield man was arrested Thursday, along with seventeen other New Jersey residents. These people were arrested as part of a federal round up of the members and associates of the Genovese crime family. Richard Dehmer worked as a bookie for an illegal sports betting operation. The operation was ran by a man named Stephen Depiro, who was a soldier in the Genovese crime family. People who owed Dehmer money were threatened with physical violence. He was also accused of operating an illegal poker club located in Kenilworth, where Depiro resides. In a specific case where a gambler received serious injuries due to paying his debts late, a transcribed recorded phone call points strongly at Dehmer being guilty. Also, in another case of a gambler who owed Dehmer money, a taped call has Dehmer stating to do pysical harm to the gambler. People paid Dehmer frankly because they were frightened by Depiro. Dehmer was able to use this association to put fear in all of those which owed him money. Depiro even ran an extortion operation through New Jersey dockworkers. Thousands of dollars was taken from dockworkers by the threats and violence Depiro placed on them. Dehmer does not seem to be a member of the La Cosa Nostra like Depiro. He is however, an associate in the Genovese crime family. Dehmer is charged with rackateering conspiracy involving the collection of unlawful debt and charges relating to bookmaking and gambling, and if convicted, 100 years in prison and two million dollars worth of fines will be Dehmer's fate.
I believe that Dehmer should be convicted with all charges pinned against him. The recorded phone calls are more than enough to convince me that he is indeed guilty. The entire idea of using physical violence and threats against humans for the sake of money is absurd. Money is placed on a pedestal by Dehmer and Depiro; it is their driving force to commit such horrid actions. These men deserve nothing less than the sentences placed before them.
