When February 2011 comes around, most football fans have one thing in mind: the Super Bowl, but what many people may not be aware of is the alarming number of pimps following around these fans with underage sex workers. Chris Burchell, president of Texas Anti-Trafficking in Persons, says there are websites created by pimps which rate girls, cities, and business environments and give other pimps information they can use to advance their businesses. People, especially young women, are trafficked into the United States from all around the world and exploited on a daily basis. Advocates and public safety officials in North Texas say that the Texas residents should expect a rush of human-trafficking awareness events during the next month due to the Super Bowl. One groups called Traffick911 hopes to establish a safe home in North Texas for children who are identified as workers in the sex trade. Much is being done to prevent, identify, and rescue trafficked victims as the Super Bowl comes around this year.
It is surprising how few people are aware of human trafficking and how common it is all over the world. Not only does it happen in places such as Thailand and Amsterdam, it happens in the United States, in our backyards. Spreading awareness is a vital step in fighting trafficking. I am glad to know that the law enforcement training organization has mandated hours or training for the officers and everyone is going to be on the lookout for trafficked children during the Super Bowl hype.
