Blog #4 : Egypt Protests: Obama Sharply Questions Mubarak Pledge To Stay In Power
After a speech by Mubarak defiantly stating his will to stay in power until elections late this year, Obama spoke up and responded. Obama met with his national security team and produced a speech directed to the Egypt leader. Obama referred to Mubarak’s failure to deliver a trustworthy message to Egypt, claiming to step down in the near future and then returning to a stubborn position to stay in office. Obama warned that protests would not heed until progressive action is taken. He claimed that it is the government’s responsibility to deliver a clear message to its people and the world and Egypt is not doing that. Obama urged that Egypt find a direct route to transitional democracy and listen to its people. In Mubarak’s thirty year rule, the past seventeen days of protests mark the strongest challenge to his rule. Protestors and the world remain confused and surprised as events continue to unfold without any avail to an answer. U.S. officials admit that the U.S. government has limited influence on how the remainder of protests unfolds in Egypt. This is interesting, however, to hear the U.S. president speak up with vague warnings to act immediately. Egypt represents a major Arab country in deep reform without American interference. Perhaps Obama is preparing for tentative reinforcement lest things go awry.
