The story that I chose to do my blog on this week has so much going on in it. There is a fairly new term “corrective rape” which is heavily affecting South Africa. This is targeting the “lesbian” community; corrective rape is when a man rapes a homosexual female with the intent to “turn” her straight. This story not only referred to two sociological terms that I have heard and learned while studying sociology but in a sense this refers to sociological ideas as well. Such as being a homosexual is a “deviant behavior”. Even though this story is based heavily on the corrective rape that is occurring in South Africa, this issue is happening all over the world. These women are being beaten and raped just because of their sexuality, some of these rapes have led to the death of these women whether they died during the process or because they contracted HIV/AIDS from this action and died. This article was talking about these to websites which are Change.org and Avaaz.org, these two websites are trying to help women that have been raped and trying to get the governments to enforce stronger laws so that other women may be protected from going through the same thing, they want to corrective rape to be considered a hate crime, which in my opinion it is considered a hate crime based on the definition alone this is clearly targeted for the gay community. I believe that homosexuality has came a long way and is more widely accepted but this is not only killing women and messing them up psychologically it is also increasing HIV/AIDS numbers which is already high enough especially to be a deadly disease with no cure.
