The Navy has just come out with a new type of laser that can shoot cruise missiles from the sky in seconds with great accuracy. The laser they made needs an incredible amount of power to run, during the tour of the facility the scientist showed a test of the laser, they “saw scientist’s blast unprecedented levels of power into a prototype accelerator, producing a supercharged electron beam that can burn through 200 feet of steel per second.” This is bringing us closer to the creation of actual laser guns. Though this will most likely be used for military purposes where they will have lasers as weapons. If this laser can go through 200 feet of solid steal in a second imagine what it would do to people. The good thing about these new lasers bring created today are “huge in regards to upgrading the laser power beam quality,” these lasers are better for taking down missiles. This is great for defensive purposes, though somehow someone will most likely be using this for offensive purposes. The government gave the Navy $163 million to work on this laser tech; they will hopefully be finished with this technology by 2015. “The military already uses lasers across the spectrum. What makes this technology different is its power source.” The lasers they have now use different wavelengths depending on what they need the laser for. The best part of the defensive purposes for these lasers is that atmospheric conditions don’t affect the lasers. The bad thing for the world is that these lasers will probably be made into weapons and be used against other people or countries.
